The bodies of a man and woman, who had gone missing after jumping into the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal on Wednesday, were recovered near the Shivapura Lake close to the Bhoruka Power Plant Centre on Friday.
The deceased have been identified as Praveen from Hosa Lingapura village in Koppal taluk and Anjali from Sanapur in Gangavati taluk.
According to police sources, they eloped but were persuaded to return home.
Praveen’s mother had sent a car to bring them back. On their way back home, the two asked the driver to stop, saying that they needed to use the toilet but jumped into the canal.
The police said that the bodies were found with a dupatta (veil) tied around both their hands, indicating they had leapt together.
A search operation was carried out for two days by the police and Fire and Emergency Services personnel before the bodies were found.
A case has been registered at Munirabad Police Station. Further investigation is under way.
