The Thiruvananthapuram Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man and his lover to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹50,000 each for attempting to murder his estranged wife.

Judge M.P. Shibu found Nalan, 59, a social worker who hails from Ayiroor, and Pulimath native Sujatha, 59, who is also a social worker, guilty of attempted murder of Chemmaruthy native Geetha Nalan, 52.

According to the prosecution led by special public prosecutor Ajith Prasad J.K., the incident occurred on January 2, 2025. Geetha, a former member of the Chemmaruthy grama panchayat, had been living separately with their children. However, upon hearing that Nalan had brought his lover to his house, Geetha went there to confront him. She was attacked by the accused duo, who also force fed her potassium permanganate powder.

Despite spitting out much of the chemical, she suffered burns in her mouth and lost consciousness. She was soon rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital by her relatives. Both Nalan and Sujatha were subsequently arrested by the Varkala police.
