NEW DELHI
The Delhi police have directed e-commerce and social media platforms to immediately halt the listing and delivery of firecrackers within the national capital, an official said on Friday.
The move follows the Delhi government’s order dated December 19, 2024, and recent observations by the Supreme Court on May 6, 2025, in the ‘MC Mehta vs Union of India and Others’ case, both of which emphasised the urgent need to curb air pollution caused by firecrackers.
In a formal communication, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police asked all relevant online platforms to take swift action to ensure compliance with the firecracker ban.
“The platforms have been instructed to delist all firecracker-related products and disable the purchase option for customers located in Delhi. They must also implement location-based restrictions to prevent any sale or delivery of firecrackers in the city,” said Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Devesh Chandra Srivastava.
Platforms are also required to issue a public notice informing users about the firecracker ban and to sensitise their logistics and delivery personnel, ensuring no firecracker consignments are accepted, transported, or delivered within the national capital during the ban period.
Mr. Srivastava said that all platforms must submit written confirmation of compliance, underscoring that the directive is aimed at protecting public health, particularly during times of elevated pollution, such as festive seasons.
The police have also issued advisories to banquet halls, hotels, marriage venues, guesthouses, and other ceremonial facilities across the city, mandating strict adherence to the ban.
“Any violation will invite criminal prosecution under relevant laws, given the total and unconditional ban imposed by both the Supreme Court and the Delhi government,” Mr. Srivastava warned.
Local police units have been instructed to personally serve advisories to all establishments concerned, the officer added.
