The travelling public have called upon the Railways to safeguard passengers from the hassles being caused by rising number of street dogs at the Mettupalayam Railway Station.

Tourists from within and outside the country who visit the 125-year-old railway station to board the Nilgiris Mountain Railways fear being bitten by the dogs, according to members of Periyanaickenpalayam Train Passengers’ Welfare Association.

The railway station also serves several hundreds of college students and office-goers utilising the MEMU services.

The Nilgiri Express train also departs from the station during the night hours, and the travellers complain of the inconvenience. Passengers arriving by the Nilgiris Express in the early morning hours are also in constant fear of getting bitten.

The dog population in and around the station has proliferated due to the bushes that have been left uncleared in the surroundings, the daily passengers contended.

The authorities must take action before occurrence of untoward incidents, they emphasised.
