Pedestrian neglect

To facilitate a smooth traffic flow at the key points in Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai, the traffic regulating authority has initiated circular movement patterns at road junctions, which help to mitigate traffic congestion to a great extent. But in most cases, the safety and convenience of pedestrians have been overlooked. For example, near the Samadhanapuram roundabout, pedestrians walk along the road or cross the road, finding it threatening as there is no pavement for walking and no designated pedestrian crossings. A similar situation exists at Murugankurichi signal in Thiruvananthapuram road, where many supermarkets and shopping complexes are located. The authorities concerned must address the issue and set up a pedestrian pavement along the roadside for the convenience of the people.

Halted work

The railway bridge work at Ozhuginesary remains standing still. Though the bridge was primarily meant for the process of doubling the railway line, the commuters thought that it would ease the heavy vehicular movement at Ozhuginesary. But to the disappointment of the commuters, the bridge work came to a halt abruptly. The halted work not only bothers the travellers but also causes loss to the public fund, since the materials used for the work are getting damaged.

Elephant encounters

Elephant intrusions into plantations and residential areas at Pechiparai and other areas located on the fringe of forest cover in Kanniyakumari highlight the urgent need for better management of man-elephant conflict. Designation of uninterrupted elephant corridors with sufficient food, water and alarm systems signal the approach of elephants is needed to reduce the damage to life and property.

Bus route revival

Palayamkottai has become thickly populated due to the presence of many schools, colleges and hospitals. Thiagaraja Nagar, Anbu Nagar, Perumal Puram, Maharaja Nagar and Shanti Nagar are occupied by employees. But there is no direct town bus facility connecting these places to M.G.R. New Bus Stand. The district administration should take immediate actions to revive this route which will be beneficial to the public.
