The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University declared a day’s holiday on Friday following a clash between two groups of students with caste overtone on the University campus on Thursday.
Sources in the MSU said the University administration has banned the students from moving around on the University campus on bikes as the road rage in the past had resulted in a few accidents. The students, on entering the University campus, should park their vehicles in the designated parking lot near the main entrance. However, the research scholars have been exempted from this norm.
After a few students’ used their bikes in the campus in a rash and negligent manner, some other students had objected to it, which had triggered a friction. Before things snowballed into a major controversy, the authorities alerted the police, who had advised the MSU to declare holiday for one day
The police are investigating and the MSU authorities would also conduct internal probe. The university would be open from Monday and normalcy would be restored by then, the faculty members hoped.
