The Coimbatore District Police have intensified searches for a group of men, who robbed a Kerala-based goldsmith of ₹30 lakh on Salem – Kochi Highway (NH 544) near Ettimadai last week.
The K.G. Chavadi police launched an investigation after K. Jayan, 50, of Wadakkanchery in Thrissur district lodged a complaint that he was robbed of the cash on a flyover on the highway at Ettimadai junction on July 12.
The police said Mr. Jayan started working in a gold smithery at Nellankara in Thrissur district last year, after incurring loss from running a jewellery polishing unit at R.S. Puram in Coimbatore.
As Mr. Jayan is known to people in the jewellery business in Coimbatore, he used to arrange old gold ornaments, which are auctioned by banks and financial institutions in Kerala, for them.

According to the police, a jeweller gave ₹30 lakh to Mr. Jayan to source old ornaments auctioned in Kerala and the robbery took place when he was heading to Thrissur with the cash.
The police said unidentified persons, who came in a multi-purpose vehicle, waylaid Mr. Jayan’s motorcycle at Ettimadai junction around 7.45 a.m. on July 12 when he was riding back to Thrissur.

The strangers pulled him into the car, before robbing him of ₹30 lakh. The robbers left him on the highway around one km away. He lodged a complaint with the K.G. Chavadi police in the evening.
