The National Medical Commission (NMC) has rejected the State government’s proposal to start three new medical colleges for the academic year of 2025-26. It has also not permitted the enhancement of 800 MBBS seats in government medical colleges citing lack of necessary infrastructure and faculty recruitment.

“We were hoping to get permission to start three new medical colleges and enhance medical seats in government medical colleges this year, but the NMC has rejected permission for both,” said B. L. Sujatha Rathod, Director, Directorate of Medical Education.

The Medical Education Department had submitted a proposal to establish three new medical colleges, including two government colleges and one private one — Ramanagara Institute of Medical Sciences in Ramanagara, Kanakapura Institute of Medical Sciences in Kanakapura, and Farooq Academy of Medical Sciences in Mysuru — this year.

The State government has been submitting proposals to start government medical colleges in Ramanagara and Kanakapura for the last three years. However, the NMC had denied permission to start the colleges in 2023-24 and 2024-2025 citing the same reasons.

Medical colleges in Ramanagara and Kanakapura are championed by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar who has held multiple meetings with Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil. Mr. Shivakuma has instructed to make the necessary preparations for the start of the new medical colleges. But, this year too, a request was submitted to start the colleges without appointing the required teaching staff.
