The Kerala High Court has ordered that police be deployed in adequate numbers till the announcement of the results of the election to the Calicut University union that is slated for July 22, to prevent violent incidents.

It also issued notices to three SFI activists on a petition by Shifana P.K., a chairperson candidate. She alleged that the activists and their companions were threatening her and many others not to contest the election. According to her, they also damaged varsity properties, following which a case was registered against them. She further alleged that she was aggrieved by the ‘inaction’ on the part of the police in providing protection.

The government told the court that police protection would be provided since it was a university union election. Following this, the Bench of Justice N. Nagaresh ordered the deployment of police personnel and the issuance of a notice to the three activists who were arraigned as respondents in the case.
