Karnataka rain: Belagavi district received surplus rainfall, but wide variation across taluks

Belagavi district in Karnataka has received 25% surplus rainfall, above the aggregated annual average for the monsoon season.

According to figures released by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) on September 1, the district got 595 mm rainfall against the annual average of 476 mm for the period from June to August. However, there are wide variations in rainfall, with Khanapur taluk receiving the highest rainfall of 1,915 mm against 1,525 mm, and Belagavi taluk the lowest rainfall with 787 mm against the average of 935 mm, a 16% deficit.

The district received 217 mm rainfall against a normal of 146 mm, a 48% surplus in June. In July, it was a 13% deficit. In August, it was a 54% surplus.

Saundatti, Yargatti and Hukkeri had surplus rainfall while Bailhongal, Kittur and Mudalagi had deficit rainfall.

On September 1, water in the Krishna river and its tributaries had reduced slightly due to low rainfall and reduced discharge from Maharashtra. The total discharge at Kallol barrage was 59,807 cusecs. This was around 5,079 cusecs less than on August 31.

The inflow into the Almatti dam was around 76,081 cusecs and the outflow was 72,030 cusecs. The dam now has 122.13 tmcft of water, or 99% of its capacity.

In Renuka Sagar dam, the inflow was 5,714 cusecs and outflow was 4,094 cusecs. The dam was nearly full with 37 tmcft of water.
