The Singanallur police in Coimbatore on Friday arrested a woman on charges of murdering her four-and-a-half-year-old daughter, allegedly after the child became a hurdle in her affair with a man.

The arrested has been identified as R. Tamilarasi, 30, of Irugur.

According to the police, Tamilarasi, along with her daughter R. Abarnasree, was residing with her sister at Manikkam Nagar at Irugur, after distancing herself from husband Ragupathy over alleged differences of opinion.

Mr. Ragupathy was informed on Friday noon that his daughter died. Tamilarasi claimed that her daughter played in a nearby area in the morning and she vomited after returning home. The woman claimed further that the girl went to bed and became unconscious thereafter. Though the girl was rushed to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, doctors declared her dead on arrival, she claimed.

Mr. Ragupathy approached the police stating that he had suspicions in his daughter’s death. Some of the relatives told the police that Tamilarasi’s separation from her husband a year ago and her alleged affair with a man could be connected to the child’s death.

When questioned, Tamilarasi confessed to strangulating her daughter. As per Tamilarasi’s statement, her paramour Vasanth wanted her to leave the child if she needed to live with him. The police said that the cause of death could be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination on Saturday.
