Govindachamy, the convict in the 2011 rape and murder case who escaped from Kannur central jail on Friday (July 25, 2025) was shifted to Viyyur Central Jail in Thrissur under tight security early on Saturday (July 26, 2025) morning.

Govindachamy was recaptured ours after his escape and brought back to the Kannur Central Jail by Friday evening. Following the incident 3 officials was suspended for the reliction of duty and the department inquiry is underway.

Govindachamy, the convict in the 2011 rape and murder case of a 23-year-old woman who had escaped from Kannur Central Jail in Kerala, was arrested on Friday (July 25, 2025). He was hiding inside the stairs of a well behind the National Sample Survey Sub-regional Office in Kannur.

Inspections have been intensified inside the present complex to check the functionality of the electric fencing and CCTV surveillance systems. Initial finding point to major failure in security monitoring.

On Friday (July 25, 2025), the guard officer realised someone had escape after spotting a piece of cloth hanging on the prison wall. Upon rechecking, it was confirmed that Govindachamy had scale the wall and fled

The incident has raised serious questions about prison security protocol and the accuracy of routine checks in one of the states most fortified correctional facilities
