A Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) of police, who was assaulted by a group of intoxicated acquaintances eight days ago in Egmore, has succumbed to his injuries. The Egmore Police on Saturday arrested three men on charges of murder and abetment.
The victim has been identified as Rajaraman, 54, a native of Kolli Hills, an SSI attached with Armed Reserve Unit-1 of Greater Chennai City Police and serving at Prisoners’ Ward in Government Stanley Hospital.
On July 18, at 8 pm, he along with his friends all reportedly drank at a bar in a shopping mall. While they were leaving the place at 9.45 pm, a brawl happened. Two of his known acquaintances reportedly attacked him and pushed him down and escaped from there. He was lying unconscious due to internal injury on his head, said police. He was taken to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. He was admitted in critical condition at the intensive care unit. Based on complaint given by his wife Kokilambal, 50, Egmore Police registered a case for attempt to murder and were searching for the suspects.
Under such circumstances, Rajaraman succumbed to injuries at the hospital in the late hours of Friday. After pursuing the investigation, Egmore police arrested two of his friends – Rakesh, 30 of Neelangarai and Sarathkumar alias Ayappa, 36 of Kannagi Nagar who were sheltered at a house in Bengaluru. Their accomplice Navothik, 26 of Valasaravakkam was also arrested by police for sheltering the accused, said police.
