Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education, IT, and Electronics Nara Lokesh has urged Google to set up a Chip Designing Centre in Visakhapatnam in the State.

During his third visit to Singapore on Tuesday (July 29, 2025), he met  Google Cloud Director, Drew Brynes. The meeting focused on strengthening Google’s engagement with Andhra Pradesh through data infrastructure, AI training, and advanced hardware development.

The HRD Minister  proposed that, since Google is now designing its own chips for its server infrastructure, the company should consider setting up a Chip design centre within the proposed data centre campus in Visakhapatnam. This, he said, would not only enhance the technical ecosystem in the region but also align with Google’s efforts to shift manufacturing away from China and Taiwan.

Mr. Lokesh recalled that on December 11, 2024, the Government of Andhra Pradesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Google to establish a Data City in Visakhapatnam. He noted that all necessary infrastructure for the proposed Data City has now been completed, and urged Google to initiate the construction of its data centre at the earliest.

Mr. Lokesh also emphasised the potential of Andhra Pradesh to become a global hub for server maintenance and repair services, given its strong air and port connectivity. He suggested that Google Cloud or its server supply partners could leverage AP’s strategic location for servicing global data operations.

Mr.  Lokesh added that Andhra Pradesh is committed to promoting the use of Artificial Intelligence among its youth and has already signed another MoU with Google to conduct AI training and skilling programs across the state.

Google Cloud Director, Drew Brynes assured that the company will review the proposals with its senior leadership and assured that a favourable decision would be taken after internal discussions. He also reaffirmed Google’s commitment to the projects already initiated in the State.
