The police on Thursday arrested a 49-year-old man from Dharmapuri district on charges of attempting to murder his wife in Coimbatore.
P. Palani, who hailed from Kamalanatham village in Samichettipatti in Dharmapuri, was arrested for attempting to murder his wife P. Sarasu.
The police said that the couple had been residing with their son and daughter at Cheran Ma Nagar in the city for the past 15 years. Palani, a construction worker, spent his wages on alcohol. He used to fight with his wife under the influence of alcohol and ignored warnings from his son and daughter. Following recurring instances of quarrel in drunken state, Sarasu reportedly told him not to enter the house under the influence of alcohol.
According to the police, Palani met Sarasu at a bus stop in Cheran Ma Nagar on Wednesday. He drew a knife from his waist and stabbed her multiple times below the right chest.
Vijayan and Karthikeyan, friends of the couple’s son Bharath, came for her help after seeing the assault. However, Palani brandished the knife at them, before escaping.Â
The woman was rushed to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where her condition was stable as on Friday, after surgeries. The police arrested Palani on Thursday based on a complaint lodged by his son. He was remanded in judicial custody.Â
