The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has urged the district administration to implement minimum wages for contract workers employed in local bodies and the medical department across the district.
The District Welfare Board Monitoring Committee meeting for construction and unorganised workers was held at the Collectorate on Thursday under the chairmanship of Collector S. Kandasamy. Representatives from various trade unions and employer organisations participated in the meeting. AITUC district president S. Chinnasamy submitted four petitions to the Collector, outlining several key demands.
One petition called for the retrospective implementation of minimum wages for contract workers in municipalities including Gobichettipalayam, Sathyamangalam, Bhavani, and Punjai Puliyampatti. It also urged the immediate appointment of a permanent commissioner for the newly formed Perundurai Municipality and the payment of government-fixed minimum wages to all municipal employees.
Another petition demanded the enforcement of minimum wages fixed by the Collector for contract staff at the Erode Government Headquarters Hospital, recruitment of 100% of the required workforce, and immediate deployment of additional staff for the multi-speciality block.
On behalf of the Perundurai SIPCOT Affected People’s Welfare Association, a petition was submitted requesting the government to determine compensation for about 350 acres of land acquired for SIPCOT, in accordance with the maximum compensation guidelines issued by the Madras High Court, and to release a corresponding government order.
A petition sought action against illegal activities by SIPCOT industries that have caused environmental pollution in surrounding areas. It also called for expediting the establishment of the Common Effluent Treatment Plant, filling of vacant posts in SIPCOT and the Pollution Control Board, and convening a tripartite meeting under the Collector’s leadership to resolve ongoing issues.
