The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Saturday began the anti-rabies vaccination camp in Manali and Madhavaram Zones (II and III) with 20 teams — each with five catchers, two veterinarians and one attender.

“About 400 dogs were vaccinated on Saturday. From Monday or Tuesday, the activity will be carried out simultaneously in three zones, with 10 teams in each zone, each team targeting 100 dogs per day. The programme is expected to cover both pet and street dogs in 60 days across all 200 wards. Vaccines for intestinal parasite treatment, skin conditions, endo and exo parasiticides will be administered along with the anti-rabies vaccine to dogs,” an official in the Public Health Department said.

“A six-way vaccine against canine distemper and other infections was introduced this year and 7,500 doses have been administered at Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres so far. More will be procured soon,” he added.

Mayor R. Priya said if animals are found unsterilised during this vaccination programme, they will be taken to ABC centers.
