A newborn baby was rescued by the Triplicane police after it was brought to the Omandurar multi-speciality hospital by the father who tried to handover the infant to the hospital as an abandoned child on Sunday.

A senior official of the City police said M. Praveen, 21, a native of Nilgiris, was in a relationship with a post-graduate student, the mother, at Madras University. The couple took a room at a lodge in Triplicane, where the boy was born on Saturday night.

According to the police, Praveen informed the woman that he was not willing to raise the child and planned to abandon it at the Omandurar multi-speciality hospital. He went to the hospital and told the authorities that the child was found abandoned on CNK Road of Triplicane. The hospital authorities immediately alerted the police.

During the investigation, the police officials found out that Praveen was the father and had planned to abandon the infant as he was unemployed and the woman stayed at the university hostel.

Later, the police admitted both the mother and child to the Kasturba Gandhi Government Maternity Hospital.
