Three workers from Odisha were killed on Monday afternoon when a truck ran over them as they were working along the extreme edge of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) under Keesara police limits.

The victims, identified as Chekmohan and Narayana, both aged between 22 and 25, and Vijay, 30, were among 14 contract workers planting saplings beside the road, next to the railing. Keesara police inspector A. Anjaneyulu said that the trio had just finished their lunch and were walking when the truck, carrying telephone tower parts, veered off course.

“The driver, Ganesh, who was travelling from Gajuwaka to Shamirpet, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel after driving overnight with only an hour of rest. The truck first hit the railing before ploughing into the men and dragging them for nearly 50 metres at around 2.45 p.m.,” said the officer.

He added that the victims died on the spot. Ganesh was taken into custody and a case was registered.
