The Secunderabad Railway Police, in coordination with the Railway Protection Force, arrested a 23-year-old man accused of two gold chain snatching cases and recovered 77 grams of gold ornaments worth â‚č7.7 lakh.

The accused, Koruprolu Lavaraju of Suraram, residing in Jeedimetla, is a native of Kakinada district in Andhra Pradesh, and works as a junior chemist at Hetero Lab Ltd., Khazipally.

Police said he developed habits of drinking alcohol, smoking, and playing online betting games and online cricket.

“When his salary could not support his lifestyle, Lavaraju decided to commit thefts. While travelling to his native place, he noticed the heavy rush at Secunderabad Railway Station and concluded it would be easy to snatch valuables and escape,” said an officer from the railway police.

He allegedly snatched a gold chain from a passenger on the Simhapuri Express on February 26, and another from a passenger on the Gowthami Express on August 2.

Police said he sold two of the stolen gold chains to unidentified buyers and spent the proceeds on betting, while the third was pledged. The money from that was again used for betting.

On August 11, at around 7 a.m., police apprehended him outside Secunderabad Railway Station on suspicion. During questioning, he admitted to the offences.
