A tusker’s almost successful bid in Jawalagiri range to break through an iron fence installed to barricade elephants from crossing over, as part of the mitigation measures, was caught on camera by the Forest Department.
The iron fence, an intermediate model, however survived the pachyderm’s onslaught, according to the Department officials.
The video, recorded two days ago, showed the tusker throwing its might onto the iron fence, balancing its forelimbs against the fence pillars and bounced back and forth, with the background voices, purportedly of the Forest Department staff, shooing away and distracting the elephant.
The District Forest Officer (DFO), Jagdish S. Bakan told The Hindu that the iron fence remained intact and the elephant did not breach the fence installed about five years ago.
Iron fence with reinforced concrete was set up over the past few years in Jawalagiri range to keep elephants from straying into human habitations in Hosur forest division.
