Desilting work using floating machinery has begun at the Kodungaiyur canal near Muthamizh Nagar, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). The machine was deployed recently for clearing garbage, weeds, and silt to restore stormwater flow ahead of the Northeast monsoon, GCC stated. This comes after residents raised concerns over delays in the implementation of flood mitigation projects.

Notably, in May, the GCC’s council had approved canal restoration projects covering Otteri Nullah, Captain Cotton Canal, Trustpuram Canal, and stretches in Mambalam, Nandanam, Jafferkhanpet, Reddy Kuppam, and Veerangal Odai.
