Due to heavy inflows, Palavagu, a stormwater drain, breached, causing unexpected inundation at the under-construction iconic Secretariat Complex on Wednesday.

As a result, water entered the basement area of a couple of blocks in the Secretariat Complex that comprises five blocks.

The construction of the iconic structures is at the basement stage now. With the State government awarding tenders, the contractors have commenced works such as ground clearing.

Though many areas inundated following heavy rain, works were progressing at the remaining iconic structures on Thursday.

The government plans to construct five towers for the Secretariat — one for the General Administration Department (GAD) that is the tallest among all, and four for other departments and Commissionerates. Construction of the State Legislative Assembly is also progressing at the same location.

Out of these six major constructions, water entered only two blocks.

“We are continuing the work as there is a mandate to complete it in two-and a half years,” said an employee of the NCC company, at the 53-storeyed Secretariat building.

“At present, we are clearing the ground and verifying the strength of the existing basement structure. Construction of the parking place is also going on at the towers,” he added. Some water entered the basement area, and it was being pumped out, he said.
