Karnataka rain: 878 roads spanning 343 km damaged in Bengaluru this year

About 1,114 houses in Bengaluru were damaged due to rain this year, and three persons lost their lives in tree fall incidents, while seven others sustained injuries, according to the data presented by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar during the ongoing monsoon session of the Karnataka legislature.

The civic body had identified 218 sensitive and highly sensitive places across Bengaluru during rains, and fixed 169 of them. He presented the data while answering a question asked by Malleswaram MLA C.N. Ashwathnarayan.

According to the data, 878 roads spanning 343.41 km were damaged in Bengaluru due to rains, including pre-monsoon and monsoon, this year. At 144 roads, Mahadevapura zone has the most affected stretches, followed by South Zone (135), and Yelahanka and Bommanahalli zones, as each of them have 127 affected roads.

BBMP officials claimed that they have been working relentlessly to fix the issues.

A representative from the Climate Action Cell told The Hindu that they have been tasked to come up with solutions for areas that are severely affected by rains, and the work is underway.

Officials from the Road Infrastructure Department said that they have attended to issues on the major stretches and are further coordinating with BWSSB, Bescom and Bengaluru Traffic Police to address other issues.

The Deputy CM emphasised they are effectively using national disaster management funds and World Bank funds to fix the problems in Bengaluru. He said that they are focusing on fixing stormwater drains, and tenders have been called for the same.
