Chennai Metro Rail plans to construct a multi-storey building at Guindy and transform it into a multi-modal transit hub. This busy junction already houses both metro and suburban stations, and sees lakhs of people commuting to the area for work.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has identified a land parcel opposite the Guindy Metro Rail station, measuring 3.48 acres, for the same.
Officials of CMRL said they are envisioning a facility similar to the massive upcoming Multi-Modal Facility Complex at Broadway, which will include bus bays, retail outlets, and commercial spaces. Guindy is one of the busiest stations on the Chennai Metro Rail network, handling about 15,000 to 17,000 commuters every day. Since there is also a suburban railway station nearby, many passengers switch between the two networks at this location.
“This multi-storey building at Guindy will not be as large as the one at Broadway. However, we are planning an interchange hub for intra-city and inter-city buses, along with bus bays and a combination of retail and commercial spaces on the upper floors. We will also provide adequate parking facilities for two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Since this land parcel in Guindy is fairly close to the airport and on the flight approach path, we must get a height clearance from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and then decide on the number of floors we can build. We are currently thinking of constructing six to seven floors,” an official said.
To chalk out a plan for constructing the multi-storey building and linking it to the metro station, CMRL has floated tenders looking for a consultant.
“We are planning a foot-over-bridge linking the metro station, suburban station, and the proposed building with lift and escalators.”
The chosen consultant will prepare a detailed report after carrying out numerous surveys, including traffic surveys, projection of the footfall expected at this junction for the next two decades, final cost estimate for building this project, the time period of construction, and other such aspects.
In another three months, CMRL is expected to award a contract for the consultancy work.
