Mayor R. Priya hoisted the National Flag at the Ripon Building , in the presence of Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran, during the 79th Independence Day celebrations on Friday. Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumaar, Joint Commissioner (Health) V. P. Jeyaseelan, councillors, standing committee chairpersons, ward committee chairpersons, chief engineers, and Corporation officials attended the event.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments P. K. Sekarbabu took part in the community feast organised at the Sri Parthasarathy Perumal Temple in Triplicane. Special pujas were also conducted in all temples. Ministers including Thangam Thennarasu, and K. N. Nehru participated in community feasts at the Vadapalani Andavar Temple and at the Ananthapadmanabhaswamy temple in Adyar respectively.
As part of the Southern Railway celebrations at the Railway Stadium, Perambur, R.N. Singh, General Manager, Southern Railway hoisted the national flag. He also spoke about Southern Railwayâs contribution to the overall development of Indian Railways, including augmentation and modernisation of the rail network.Â
The CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (CSIR-SERC) and CSIR Madras Complex (CMC) celebrated the occasion, with N. Anandavalli, Director, CSIR-SERC and Coordinating Director, CMC, hoisting the national flag.
The 79th Indian Independence Day was celebrated by the Defence Forces in Chennai. Service Heads led by Lieutenant General V Sreehari, AVSM, SC, SM, General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area of Indian Army, Rear Admiral Satish Shenai, NM, Flag Officer Commanding ,TN and Puducherry Naval Area of Indian Anvy, Air Commodore Tapan Sharma, Air Officer Commanding, Indian Air Force Station Tambaram and representative of Inspector General Indian Coast Guard and veterans laid wreaths at the Victory War Memorial in the city.
At the Tambaram Armed Reserve Headquarters, Abhin Dinesh Modak, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Tambaram City hoisted the national flag. The Commissioner also awarded top three police stations in the cleanliness and maintenance competition conducted within the Tambaram City Police limits.
At the Regional Passport Office, Chennai, the National Flag was hoisted by the Regional Passport Officer S. Vijayakumar, IFS.whereas at Indian Oil Bhavan in Chennai, M Sudhakar, Executive Director (Regional Services), Southern Region hoisted the national flag. Furthermore, at Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limitedâs (CPCL) Manali Refinery complex, H. Shankar, Managing Director, CPCL, hoisted the national flag.
Uzhaippor Urimai Iyakkam members celebrated Independence Day in Ambattur. The group reiterated its opposition to the privatisation of conservancy work as well as its demand for permanent employment for sanitation workers. It stated that âwithout permanency, there is no freedomâ and that âfreedom is our birthright.â
