Panic broke out in Markandeya Nagar during the early hours of Tuesday after a man, reportedly intoxicated, went on a violent rampage, damaging and setting fire to several vehicles in the area.

The incident was reported around 3:45 a.m., when the accused, identified as Anjan Goud, aged 45, under the influence of alcohol, targeted several parked vehicles in the neighbourhood.

According to the police, seven vehicles were damaged – four two-wheelers, two cars, and an auto-rickshaw. While some vehicles were vandalised using stones, others were set ablaze.

Jeedimetla Inspector G. Mallesh said Goud, an alcoholic, has been struggling with financial distress and is heavily burdened with loans. “To avoid repaying them, he has been pretending to be mentally unstable so that lenders stop pursuing him,” the inspector said.

Based on complaints lodged by the vehicle owners, two separate cases have been registered.

The Jeedimetla police took Goud into custody while he was still in a heavily intoxicated state. He is expected to be produced before court on Wednesday.
