Collectors from Sivaganga, Theni, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram and Dindigul districts appealed to the villagers to attend the gram sabhas held on six occasions annually and ensure their participation without fail.
Sivaganga Collector K. Porkodi said at Milaganoor panchayat in Manamadurai panchayat union on Friday that the Tamil Nadu government provided welfare programmes and implemented development works for the people.
Through such meetings, the public should engage themselves and be aware of the rights and responsibilities, the policies and concessions, subsidies and other components from the officials. The Information Technology era should be rightly used and the user friendly Apps had numerous schemes of the government.
The people should know about the funds provided by the government and should have the right to know if they were used properly for the aforesaid purposes. In such gram sabha meetings, the panchayat administration shall pass resolutions, which the district administration can take it to the government’s attention for implementation.
Apart from the roads, street lights and drinking water issues, the villagers sought additional buildings for schools in the panchayat unions.
The resolutions also included setting up full time ration shops, desilting of waterbodies et al.
The Collectors and elected representatives honoured conservancy workers with shawls. People in many districts wanted the branch libraries in their locations to be given a facelift and requested more newspapers and periodicals to be kept available.
