Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association leader and TDP State secretary Gedela Srinubabu on Sunday urged the Union government to extend Other Backward Classes (OBC) status to the Turpu Kapu community across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Speaking at the North Andhra Backward Classes meet in Srikakulam, Mr. Srinubabu said the community had so far been confined to reservations only in North Andhra, leaving families settled in Hyderabad, Vijayawada and other regions deprived of opportunities in Central government jobs, railways, and public sector undertakings.
He stressed that OBC recognition was crucial for students aspiring to secure seats in IITs, NITs, IIMs, AIIMS and other premier institutions. The issue, he said, would be taken up with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, while a delegation would soon meet the National Commission for Backward Classes.
Mr. Srinubabu also assured efforts to secure OBC status for Sistakaranam, Kalinga Komati and other socially and economically weaker groups. Community leaders in Srikakulam felicitated him on the occasion, where he also promised to help establish a dedicated facility for the Turpu Kapu community.
