The Communist Party of India (CPI) has requested Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to convene an all party meeting to discuss the demand to confer Statehood for Puducherry.

In a statement, party Puducherry secretary A. M Saleem said there are reports that Chief Secretary has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court concurring with the views of Union Government that President and Governors have discretionary powers while dealing with bills.

ā€œThe party wanted to know the rationale behind filing such an affidavit when Chief Minister was pressing for Statehood for Puducherry. We have been fighting for the rights of elected government for a long time and the affidavit goes against the stand of government. Hence, the Chief Minister should convene an all party meeting to discuss Statehood,ā€ the CPI leader said.
