“Our city boasts a proud and storied legacy of law enforcement, with roots stretching back over a century and a half. A defining moment came in 1856, marking a significant chapter in the history of the Madras Town Police.
The year 1856 was a landmark in the annals of the Madras Town Police, when Act XIII of 1856, that is an Act regulating the Police of the Towns of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay and the several stations of the settlement of Prince of Wales Island, Singapore and Malaysia was enacted by the Governor – General of India. By this Act, the head of the Town Police was designed as the Commissioner of Police.
The new force was organised very much on the model of the Metropolitan Police of London (U.K.) which came into existence in the year 1829 after enactment of the Metropolitan Police Act, Home Secretary Lt. Col. J.C. Boulderson, 35th Regiment Native Infantry took charge as Commissioner of Police, on April 25,1856 from E.F. Elliott, Chief Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Madras, who commanded the Madras Town Police for nearly two decades.
Over the decades, Chennai has witnessed remarkable growth—in its size, population, and complexity. In response, our police administration has evolved significantly, culminating in the formation of the Greater Chennai City Police. Having served this city in various capacities, I’ve seen firsthand how its residents have grown more law-abiding, peace-loving, and respectful of the rule of law. Their trust and cooperation have been instrumental in shaping a safer urban environment.
Today, the Chennai City Police remains steadfast in its mission: to enforce the law with fairness and integrity, prevent crime, bring offenders to justice, and maintain peace through active collaboration with the community. Our commitment is rooted in the safety and security of every citizen.
As the 110th Commissioner of Police, I am deeply honored to serve this vibrant and resilient city. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our officers and the unwavering support of the public, Chennai stands proudly among the safest cities in India.”
