Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated the vehicle subway at Bojaraja Nagar in the Royapuram zone on Monday (August 18, 2025).
The project is expected to benefit approximately one lakh residents in Bojaraja Nagar, Srinivasan Nagar, and Mint, a press release said. The subway was built at a cost of ā¹30.13 crore.
āBojaraja Nagar in North Chennaiās Korukkupet area is surrounded on three sides by railway tracks, making it difficult for residents to transport in and out of the area, especially during emergencies. The project to build a limited-use subway (LUS) was a long-standing request from the public,ā the release added.
The construction of the subway began in 2023 using the Greater Chennai Corporationās (GCC) capital fund.
The subway is 207 metres long, including a 37-metre railway section, and is 6 metres wide.
According to the release, a water collection well, 85HP motor pumps, and a generator have been installed to remove rainwater during the monsoon season.
Further, the Deputy CM also inaugurated a childrenās play area, a roundabout park, a pedestrian walkway around the roundabout, and a rest area for the public ā all built at a cost of ā¹1.41 crore ā adjacent to the subway.
As part of the northeast monsoon preparedness work, construction of the Keelkattalai Lake surplus water drain, rehabilitation of surplus water channels, and construction of a retaining wall at the Sembakkam Bridge are being carried out at a cost of ā¹59.12 crore. The Deputy Chief Minister reviewed their progress, and directed the officials to complete the projects on time.
Further, flood-prevention work is ongoing at Narayanapuram Lake in Perungudi Zone, including the construction of a concrete covered drain and surplus channel at a cost of ā¹44 crore.
He reviewed the associated flood-prevention measures at Karapakkam, near the Rajiv Gandhi Road flyover and the Okkiyam Madavu, where Chennai Metro Rail construction work is currently in progress.
Further, Mr. Udhayanidhi reviewed the flood-mitigation wor worth ā¹91 crore undertaken to carry rainwater from the Pallikaranai marshland to the Buckingham Canal. Also, desilting and deepening work at the Okkiyam Madavu, costing ā¹27 crore, was inspected near Kannagi Nagar.
Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister K.N. Nehru, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P.K. Sekarbabu, Chennai Mayor R. Priya, elected representatives, and officials were present.
