Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] on Thursday (August 21, 2025) stated that the onus was on the Congress to decide whether Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, who stepped down as Youth Congress State president in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct against him, should also quit his position as the elected lawmaker from the Palakkad Assembly constituency.

CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan told a press conference here that Mr. Mamkootathil’s resignation as Youth Congress president seemed too little. “The act of tokenism does not rest the case against Mr. Mamkootathil,” he said. Mr. Govindan said the charges against the MLA were grave.

“Incriminating audio clips and WhatsApp messages have gone viral, warranting a police investigation,” he said.

Mr. Govindan stated that the Congress leadership in Kerala was in a state of dumbfounded denial. He accused Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan of abandoning his responsibility by pushing sexual delinquency complaints against the young leader to the back burner and brazenly propelling the latter’s meteoric rise in the party.

He said Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, MLA, feigned ignorance about the incident. “The Congress has much accounting to do in the people’s court,” he added.
