The Delhi police have busted a heroin syndicate operating in north-east Delhi with the arrest of two women drug peddlers and seizure of the contraband valued at around ₹5 crore in the international market, a senior police officer said on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said during a raid on Friday, the accused, identified as Seema, 54, a resident of Nand Nagri and her sister-in-law Samita, 43, a Shahdara resident, were apprehended near the GTB Hospital while attempting to deliver a consignment of heroin in the Nand Nagri slum cluster.

A police team recovered 1,049 grams of heroin, a two-wheeler, cash and mobile phones from the possession of the accused, the DCP said.

“The police marked Seema’s residence as one of the drug trafficking hotspots during recent intelligence mapping,” said the DCP, adding that the residence was used by the accused to store and distribute heroin.

According to the police, the modus operandi was procuring high-grade heroin from suppliers in Delhi-NCR before transporting it to Nand Nagri and surrounding localities, where it was redistributed to low-scale peddlers and end-users.

The DCP said Seema has been in narcotics for over two decades. “Seema has booked in 10 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and in 30 excise-related cases since 2000. Even her sons [identity undisclosed] are facing charges in drug cases, highlighting the entrenched involvement of her family in the drug trade,” the police officer said.

“Her sister-in-law Samita too has a criminal past, with three cases under the Excise Act and one case under the NDPS Act,” the DCP said.

A probe is under way to identify the source of supply and other members of the syndicate, the officer added.
