Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council on Tuesday passed 84 resolutions covering civic infrastructure, canal strengthening, conservancy machinery, school sanitation and market facilities.
The skating park in Anna Nagar Zone (VIII) will be revamped at a cost of ₹5.3 crore. A new fish market will be built at Basin Bridge in Kodambakkam Zone (X) with modern stalls, storage and basic amenities.
Flood prevention and canal restoration projects formed a major part of the agenda. Retaining wall and concrete flooring work for the Trustpuram canal was sanctioned at ₹16.86 crore for a 470-metre stretch from its 1,000 metre to 1,470 metre point. Desilting and stormwater drain culvert work for Captain Cotton canal will cost ₹7.7 crore. Restoration of the Otteri Nullah in Royapuram (Zone V), Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar (Zone VI) and Anna Nagar (Zone VIII) was approved at ₹66 crore. Stormwater drain and related works along TVS canal in Anna Nagar Zone’s 100-feet road will cost ₹6.63 crore.
For conservancy operations, the council sanctioned the rental of 23 suction machines for four months at ₹1.47 crore, procurement of six hydraulic operated self-propelled tree pruning machines for five years at ₹5.23 crore, and one robotic multipurpose excavator with one-year maintenance at ₹1.82 crore. A heavy-duty road sweeper machine will also be deployed.
School sanitation was addressed through the appointment of 1,747 temporary workers at Adi Dravidar primary schools in Anna Nagar (VIII) and Teynampet (IX) Zones. Workers will be appointed at a daily wage of ₹753, with one sweeper for 200 students and one worker for every 10 toilets. Co-educational schools will get both male and female staff, with minimum staffing norms fixed for girls’ and boys’ schools.
The council also approved the construction of an Animal Birth Control Centre in Alandur Zone (XII) at ₹8.69 crore. Land measuring 1,248 sq.ft belonging to Annai Dayalu Ammal Charitable Trust on Wall Tax Road will be rented by the Corporation at ₹15,080 per month. It also passed a resolution to allocate a building to the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation in the Pulianthope area, specifically on Sivaram Salai, Pattalam. After Ward 78 councillor C. Velu placed objections regarding the project, the Mayor announced that discussions with the standing committees will be re-held for reviewing the project.
GCC will shift the proposed deceased body protection centre of 2,400 sq.ft with a deep freezer box facility (capacity to store 10 bodies) from Moolakothalam burial ground in Royapuram Zone (V) to Mullai Nagar burial ground in Tondiarpet Zone (IV).
Chennai Corporation’s Building Department will develop and construct slaughterhouses at Kallikuppam, Madhanakuppam Main Road and Villivakkam for ₹5.66 crore.
A new children’s playground on O.P. Salai in Teynampet Zone (IX) at a cost of ₹1.56 crore is also to come up.
