Two sentenced to life for murdering mother and her son in 2011

The Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai on Thursday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for murdering a woman and her 6 year-old son in Madurai in 2011.

Sessions Judge R. Joseph Joy sentenced D. Kalimuthu and G. Muthupandi to life imprisonment. They were sentenced to undergo life imprisonment for offences under Section 302 (murder) and Section 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, Two counts.

The duo were also sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment each for the offences under Section 449 (house trespass in order to commit offence punishable with death) and Section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code, to run consecutively.

The court sentenced them to undergo life imprisonment for murder after completion of the 20 years sentence imposed for house trespass and robbery. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on them.

The woman Durgadevi, 32, and her son Sriram,6, were found dead in their house near Kamarajar Salai. Gold jewels and cash were stolen from the house. Teppakulam police registered a case. The woman’s husband, Vijayakumar, died by suicide eight days after the incident. Another accused, R. Alexpandiyan, too ended his life during the pendency of the trial in the case.
