Over 1,400 Vinayaka idols immersed across Coimbatore district; traffic diversions in city on Sunday

The Coimbatore city police have announced traffic diversion in the city on August 31, 2025 (Sunday) in view of the processions for immersion of Vinayaka idols in Muthannankulam. Heavy vehicles and trucks will not be permitted to operate in the city from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the day.

All vehicles from Ukkadam to Perur should pass through Ukkadam- Perur bypass, Selvapuram and Shivalaya Theatre junction. Vehicles to Vysial street and Sullivan street from Gandhipuram and Town Hall should take a right turn at Ukkadam, proceed to Selvapuram via Perur bypass, Sivalaya Theatre junction and proceed further.

Vehicles heading to Tiruchi Road via Ukkadam can reach Sungam Junction through Ukkadam – Sungam bypass and continue further. Vehicles from Ukkadam to Mettupalayam Road and Thadagam Road should pass via Oppanakara Street, five corner junction, Big Bazaar Street, Lanka Corner Junction, railway station and Gandhipuram to proceed further.

Vehicles entering the city from Thadagam Road should take a left turn at GCT Junction and proceed via Bharathi Park Road to reach Mettupalayam Road to continue further. Vehicles to the city from Mettupalayam Road should take a left turn at Sanganoor junction and continue further via the Ganapathy – Gandhipuram route.

Vehicles from Mettupalayam Road to the city can use the Coimbatore north flyover to reach Gandhipuram after the processions carrying Vinayaka idols cross Central Theatre as they head towards Muthannankulam. All buses and vehicles entering the city from Perur should take a right turn near the higher secondary school at Selvapuram to enter Perur – Ukkadam bypass.

Vehicles from Perur to Thadagam Road should pass through through Shivalaya junction, Ramamurthy Road, Panaimarathoor, Poosaripalayam and Seeranaickenpalayam to reach Marudhamalai Road to proceed further to Thadagam Road by taking a left turn at Lawley Road junction.

Vehicles to the city from Marudhamalai should take a left turn at Lawley Road junction and take a right turn at GCT junction to enter Bharathi Park Road to reach Mettupalayam Road to proceed further.

All vehicles from Avinashi Road old flyover should take a left turn at Marakkadai junction and proceed along the NH road, five corner and Town Hall to reach Ukkadam.

Buses and light motor vehicles going from Gandhipuram to Marudhamalai should pass along Sivananda Colony and ARC junction to enter Alagesan Road, Thadagam Road, GCT junction and Lawley Road junction to head towards Marudhamalai.

Parking of vehicles is not permitted on the sides of procession routes on Sunday.

1,400 Vinayaka idols immersed in water bodies across Coimbatore district

Meanwhile, around 1,400 large-sized idols of Lord Vinayaka were immersed in water bodies across Coimbatore district on Friday.

In Coimbatore city, immersion of idols continued in various tanks till 10 p.m. The police said that around 425 out of the 725 idols, which had been installed by the public, political parties and various organisations in the city with police permission, were immersed on Friday. Around 750 police personnel were on duty for the smooth conduct of processions and immersion of idols in the city. The immersion of the remaining idols will take place on Sunday.

In Coimbatore rural, around 970 Vinayaka idols were immersed in rivers and tanks in Pollachi, Valparai, Periyanaickenpalayam, Perur, Karumathampatti and Mettupalayam police sub-divisions. A total of 1,450 police personnel were deployed for the smooth conduct of processions and immersion of idols. The remaining idols will be immersed on Saturday and Sunday.
