At present, the dumpyard receives between 2,700 and 3,000 tonnes of fresh waste per day.
The Perungudi dumpyard is set to get a new integrated facility worth ₹350 crore that will process and dispose of fresh municipal solid waste. This will be taken up as a three-month pilot project by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
The project components include mechanical segregation of mixed municipal solid waste, conversion of wet waste into compost through windrow composting, supply of wet waste to biogas plants, and treatment using black soldier fly larvae. Dry waste will be separated into recyclables, with the remaining converted into refuse-derived fuel.
An official said the GCC would provide about eight acres of land and necessary electricity supply components for setting up the facility at Perungudi. “The operator will bring the workforce and vehicles, install the machinery, and erect the facility within 90 days of the issuance of the work order,” the official said.
The facility will process 400 metric tonnes per day. It is designed to mechanically segregate mixed municipal solid waste into wet and dry fractions, the official said.
“The wet waste will also be treated using black soldier fly larvae, which eat the waste and turn it into protein-rich feed and organic manure,” he added.
The operator must dispose of all recovered materials, including compost and recyclables, within 12-16 weeks of production. A maximum of 7% rejected materials may be returned to the dumpyard. At present, it receives between 2,700 and 3,000 tonnes of fresh waste per day.
According to civic officials, leachate generated during processing will be collected in a sump and transported at regular intervals to a treatment plant for safe disposal as mandated by the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board norms.
