Chennai Corporation reclaims nearly 100 acres of land in two dump yards

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) cleared 43.33 lakh metric tonnes of waste from its two largest dump yards, reclaiming nearly 100 acres of land once buried under garbage.

According to a press release, every day, about 6,300 tonnes of solid waste is transported from across the city’s 426 square kilometre area and transported at the dump yards at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur.

Of the 250-acre Perungudi dump yard, 225 acre holds 27.50 lakh tonnes of waste. So far, 25.30 lakh metric tonnes were cleared and 94.29 acres reclaimed, with the remaining waste to be removed by year’s end, GCC said. Biomining under six packages worth ₹350.65 crore had started in 2022.

Kodungaiyur covers 342.91 acres, of which 252 acres were under waste totalling 66.52 lakh tonne. Works worth ₹641 crore began in 2024. The release stated that 18.03 lakh metric tonnes had been removed and three acres recovered. The release mentioned that fencing, irrigation and 1,500 saplings were added on the reclaimed land.
