Two days after four persons were taken into custody for murdering a ‘sevadar’ at the Kalkaji temple, five more suspects were arrested on Monday, said the police. The suspects were identified as Sandeep Bidhuri, 33, Monu Kangar, 31, Rohit Bidhuri, 24, Anil Pandey, 46, and Babu, 40.
On Friday, Yogendra Singh, the 35-year-old sevadar, couldn’t offer ‘chunni prasad’ to the accused, for which the accused beat him to death.
Following the incident, the temple staff requested improved security arrangements.
An officer said that more arrests are expected in the case, which is being pursued on priority.
‘No one to be spared’
“Teams are scanning CCTV footage, analysing technical evidence and questioning several people to identify and arrest the remaining suspects. We will arrest all those involved in the assault soon. No one will be spared,” the DCP said.
Another senior officer said the accused, who are all from the same area and are related, have had previous incidents of showing dominance.
“We are investigating if there have been previous cases where these people have been involved,” said the officer. Police are investigating their criminal backgrounds and are also probing whether others assisted them in escaping after the incident, the officer said.
Singh’s younger brother, Kaushal, has demanded strict punishment for all the culprits and sought financial assistance for his family. Singh left behind a six-year-old daughter who has a disability that requires expensive medical care.
“Yogendra [Singh] worked tirelessly to support his family. We cannot imagine why such cruelty was inflicted on him. We want the strictest punishment so that such crimes never happen again,” Kaushal said.
