Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Air Customs office at Coimbatore International Airport seized smuggled goods worth totally about ₹43 lakh on September 1 and 2.
Official sources said the officials intercepted six passengers on September 1 who arrived at the airport from Sharjah by Air Arabia flight and seized 913 cigarette cartons, and 37 phones totally valued at ₹36 lakh. Arabath Ali Kather Sekkathi of Ramanathapuram, Ganeshan Kathan of Sivaganga, Munna Rafi of Chennai, Abul Hassan Ismail of Chennai, and Raseek Ahamed and Hussain Abdul Cader of Ramanathapuram had carried the goods in the check-in baggage and the officials took action under the Customs Act, 1962.
On September 2, the officials intercepted Dilli Jayaraj of Chennai who arrived at the airport from Abu Dhabi by Indigo Flight and seized 110 cigarette cartons (worth ₹2 lakh) that was hidden in the check-in baggage. They also seized 170 cigarette cartons from Thanga Vanitha of Madurai, who arrived at the Coimbatore airport by the same flight. The cigarettes were worth ₹5.78 lakh.
