Kochi has been included in the flood risk management project of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Mayor M. Anilkumar has said.
Climate change and unpredictable monsoon patterns have been triggering heavy rain and flooding. The current governing committee has been able to take forward the city’s flood mitigation mechanism very effectively. The committee had asked for more funds from the NDMA for projects, including the implementation of a drainage master plan, he said.
“In keeping with our request, an assistance of ₹222 crore has been sanctioned, of which the Centre will provide ₹200 crore and the State ₹22 crore,” said Mr. Anilkumar. The Kochi Corporation has been asked to submit a detailed project report based on which the Centre will allocate the funds.
The NDMA under the Home Ministry has sanctioned the amount in the context of climate change, the Mayor said.
