GCC built 88 sponge parks, improved 70 waterbodies since 2021

Chennai had 210 lakes four years ago, and has 251 lakes at present, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).

During this period, the civic body restored 70 waterbodies at a cost of ₹144.34 crore, and constructed 88 sponge parks at ₹14.74 crore.

A press release said since 2021, 70 waterbodies were improved, including Villivakkam Lake under the Chennai Mega City Development Mission, Kadapakkam Lake using Asian Development Bank funds, Ariyalur and Kosappur Lakes under the Namakku Naame Scheme, Kargil Nagar lake in Tiruvottiyur under Singara Chennai 2.0, and temple tanks in Ambattur and Sholinganallur zones.

Works were also carried out under AMRUT 2.0, Singara Chennai 2.0, and General Fund allocations in Manali, Madhavaram, Perungudi, and other zones. Moreover, new lakes were created on the Guindy Race Club land, it said.

41 lakes to be restored

In the next phase, 41 lakes, including those in Perumal Koil Street, J.J. Nagar, Union Carbide Colony, and Basin Lake would be restored at a cost of ₹119.42 crore, according to the GCC. Additionally, 22 lakes in the southern region are under development.
