The Iyyappanthangal area, located between Porur and Poonamallee, has become a busy residential locality after the establishment of a bus terminus.

Previously, Porur, which had an MTC bus terminus, had remained the transport hub for the residents of Mugalivakkam, Mowlivakkam, and Kundrathur. But the bus terminus was shifted to Iyyappanthangal due to the expansion of the Mount Poonamallee Road and the construction of a flyover at the Porur junction. Consequently, real estate prices shot up in Iyyappanthangal, resulting in the construction of several multi-storey apartments and creation of residential localities. Now, with the Metro Rail connectivity also being established, several villages around Iyyappanthangal have been witnessing a rise in population.î ˆ

However, residents of several localities, including Kattupakkam, Karapakkam, Thelliyar Agaram, and Paraniputhur, are finding it difficult to access the Iyyappanthangal bus terminus due to the lack of minibus services. Besides, autorickshaw drivers demand a minimum of ₹150 for a 2-3-km ride.

R.K. Ravichandran, office-bearer of Iyyappanthangal-Baraniputhur Consumer Rights Protection Society, said several areas around Iyyappanthangal had become thickly populated, and as Metro services are soon set to be operated, residents of several villages require minibus services for last-mile connectivity.

He said though the MTC operates minibus services on two to three routes, and private bus services have started operating on six routes, two more bus services — from Iyyappanthangal to Pozhichalur via Kolathuvanchery, EVP Nagar Maulivakkam and Kerugambakkam, and to Mangadu via Kolathuvanchery Vijayalakshmi Nagar, Ayyappa Nagar, and Vasantham Nagar — would help a large number of residents.

Social activist Senthil Kumar thanked the MTC for restoring the minibus services operated from Iyyappanthangal to Kumananchavadi, which was stopped five years ago.

The residents said minibuses would yield more revenue if operated on short routes with more frequency, unlike the recently launched private buses.

A senior official of the State Transport and Road Safety said at present, six new private buses were being operated, and more private buses would be operated as and when required.
