A solo exhibition of works by Gopal Jayaraman, artist, art educator and former regional director of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is underway in the city.

The works on display at the ‘Spiritual Minimalism’ expo at the Kalinka Art Gallery, Uppalam exude a striking vitality, almost as if animated by some primeval power that echoes through the realms of the artefactual and the naturally occurred states of existence.

Mr. Jayaraman’s “Spiritual Minimalism” series has been widely exhibited in India and abroad, even earning him numerous awards.

At the core, the artist’s works are a creative summation of his decades-long, deep engagement with folk heritage, traditions, drama, music and dance. His contributions span preservation and promotion of fine arts, tribal and folk traditions, spiritual and regional cultural heritage.

He is also associated with INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), Lucknow, to conserve historical and traditional paintings throughout India. Among his notable conservation projects are the Mata Mansa Devi Temple murals in Chandigarh, Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings in Mysore Palace, the frescoes of Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple (Tamil Nadu), and Tanjore Palace wall paintings.

The event is on till October 4 at the gallery (Tuesday through Saturday 3 pm to 7 pm).
