Three workers were killed following a suspected gas leak at a factory in Pithampur industrial area in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district, officials said on Monday, adding that a magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident.

According to officials, the incident took place on Sunday night during the cleaning of a chemical tank at the Shri Sagar Lubricant Oil Factory under Bagdaun police station area, after the workers inhaled an unidentified gas.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl. SP) Vijay Dawar said, “One of the workers entered first to clean a tank and when he did not return for a long time, two others went it.”

Mr. Dawar said that they were taken to Indore’s Maharaja Yashwantrao (MY) Hospital but lost their lives. The families of all three workers have been informed and invest proceedings have been filed, he added.

The workers were identified as Sushil, 30, Jagdish, 31, and Deepak, 36.

Dhar District Collector Priyank Mishra said that the administration has ordered a sub-divisional magistrate-level probe into the matter.

“The district administration has taken this matter seriously. If lapses are found, necessary legal action will be taken. We will also hold discussions with factories [in the region] to prepare a plan to prevent such incidents in future,” he said, in a statement, adding that financial aid as per the State Government’s norms will be provided to the victim families.
