The Delhi police have arrested 10 people, including a doctor, for trafficking newborns, an officer said on Monday. The suspects used to sell infants to childless couples for sums ranging from ₹1.8 lakh to ₹7.5 lakh using forged adoption papers. Six infants, all under one, were also rescued in the operation, the officer added.

Dr. Kamlesh Kumar, 33, who owns K.K. Hospital in Agra, took money to deliver children at advanced stages where termination was not possible and sold the infants, said the officer. The police identified Sundar, 35, as the main accused who acted as a middleman between the biological parents and the prospective buyers. Other accused include sisters: Krishna, 28, a final-year student of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), and Preeti, 30, who has completed the BAMS programme.

The probe

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Hemant Tiwari said the matter came to light when an Uttar Pradesh resident, Suresh, filed a complaint about the disappearance of his six-month-old child from Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan bus terminal on August 22.

“Subsequently, a case was registered at the Sunlight Colony police station under BNS sections pertaining to kidnapping and trafficking and under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015,” said Mr. Tiwari.

The DCP added that technical surveillance and intelligence inputs led a police team to Fatehabad in U.P., where it nabbed Veerbhan, 30, who admitted to abducting the six-month-old infant. Following the leads, the team reached K.K. Hospital and arrested its owner, Dr. Kamlesh, who confessed to paying for the child’s abduction.

50-km chase

Dr. Kamlesh led the police to a Firozabad resident identified as Sundar, whom the police nabbed after a 50-km chase along the U.P.-Rajasthan border. Sundar’s arrest led to the recovery of the infant from a couple in Agra, who were also taken into custody, added the senior officer.

Detailed probe revealed the presence of the larger inter-State trafficking racket and the recoveries of more infants through raids in Nainital, Agra, Lucknow and Fatehabad.

“The probe revealed an organised network of traffickers operating across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad, Chennai and Uttarakhand, targeting vulnerable families at bus stands and railway stations and selling the infants for money,” said the DCP.

While one of the recovered infants has been handed over to the parents, five others have been placed at various centres. Their cases will be presented before the Child Welfare Committee for appropriate measures, said an officer, adding that further investigation in the case is under way.
