Police arrested two men for allegedly snatching mobile phones from UPSC aspirants in Pulianthope in the early hours of Wednesday. The duo, in an inebriated condition, also assaulted police personnel with a beer bottle and damaged property inside a police station.

Police sources said the duo had allegedly robbed Thomas Alwa Edison, a civil services aspirant from Anna Nagar, of his mobile phone near the Chengai Sivam bridge on Stephenson Road. He and his friend alerted a police patrol team.

The patrolling team intercepted the suspects at Dr Ambedkar College Road junction. In a bid to escape, the men attacked the constables Ayyappa Lingam and Theerthamalai. The latter sustained a hand injury after being struck with a beer bottle. Both policemen were admitted to Government Stanley Hospital. The duo created a ruckus when they were taken to the police station.

Police identified the accused as Harshit and Salman Basha, both residents of Pulianthope. Knives and mobile phones were later seized from them. Preliminary investigation showed that seven criminal cases were already pending against Salman Basha at three different police stations. He also faces a case relating to an escape bid while admitted to the Stanley Hospital prison ward. Police said CCTV footage is being examined to ascertain the duo’s involvement in other offences. Both were remanded in custody.
