Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said that the Delhi government’s foremost priority is ensuring the safe and early return of residents stranded in violence-hit Nepal.

A youth-led anti-corruption protest that began against a government ban on social media has escalated into mass outrage. Over the past two days, at least 20 people have been killed in police firing. Ms. Gupta spoke separately with India’s Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava and Nepal’s Ambassador to India Shankar Sharma, seeking updates on the safety of Delhi residents, the assistance being extended to them, and the earliest possible arrangements for their return.

The Delhi government is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with both embassies and the agencies concerned, she said, assuring the people that they will not be left alone in this crisis. Appealing to families of those stranded in Nepal to remain calm, the Chief Minister said, “Place your trust in the information provided by the government. We are fully committed to the safety and well-being of every resident.”

Bus service halted

Meanwhile, the Delhi-Kathmandu bus service operated by Delhi Transport Corporation has been suspended in view of the unrest. “The Delhi-Kathmandu Maitri Bus Sewa will resume once the situation improves,” a transport official said, adding that passengers who had already booked tickets will be reimbursed. Launched in 2014 as a goodwill initiative, the bus service has been a popular choice for both Nepali nationals and Indian tourists.
