The half-yearly inspection of school buses operating in Coimbatore district was conducted on Saturday under the supervision of District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar.
Transport department officials inspected 1,011 school buses and issued permits. Another 633 buses are yet to be inspected.
During the exercise, 33 vehicles were directed to carry out minor repairs, while the fitness certificates of two buses were cancelled for failing to provide mandatory safety features, including an emergency exit door and proper bodywork doors.
Of the 1,644 school buses registered, 558 fall under the Coimbatore South Regional Transport Office, 475 under Coimbatore North RTO, 166 under Coimbatore Central RTO, and 445 under Coimbatore West RTO.
The inspections were conducted in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles (Regulation and Control of School Buses) Rules.
Addressing drivers, the District Collector urged them to maintain physical fitness and participate in medical camps organised by the district administration.
Speaking to reporters, he said that State Transport Corporation buses are also subjected to periodic inspections by Regional Transport Offices, and that any violations result in penalties and suspension of services.
He directed transport officials to complete the inspection of the remaining vehicles within two weeks.
